Meet Sharnee
Although Sharnee’ and her family are currently homeless, she manages to attend school each day and keep a positive attitude. Since arriving at Columbus Downtown High School, Sharnee’ has continued to maintain a 3.5 GPA and has challenged herself to enroll in College Credit Plus courses at Columbus State Community College. She plans to study forensic psychology at Columbus State.
As a community service project, Sharnee’ created care bags for people experiencing homelessness. She loved the project so much, that she continued making the bags on her own; however, Sharnee’ did not know she would one day be the recipient of the care bags. She has great appreciation for the people who have helped her by providing essential items. Making those care bags is still one of the things Sharnee’ is most proud of.
When asked what motivates her, Sharnee’ responded, “I consistently yearn to be a more successful person than I was yesterday. So every day, I strive to learn new things and see what the world has to offer before I start to change it.” Sharnee’ has managed to keep a positive attitude and exemplify steadfastness despite her personal circumstances.
Meet Brooklyn
Brooklyn and her family struggled with obtaining and maintaining stable housing. There were ongoing conflicts for Brooklyn and her family due to financial strain. As a result, Brooklyn stayed at the Huckleberry House youth crisis shelter a few times during high school. Although Brooklyn was a senior in high school during her three months stay at Huck House, she did not allow the instability in her life to keep her from graduating. She was dedicated to reaching her goal. She is now enrolled at Wilberforce University where she is studying mental health rehabilitation and hopes of becoming a probation officer after graduation.
