Community Support Partners: City Year Columbus
On a regular basis, children and youth report that school is a home to them – a place where they see the same faces, sit in the same seat, and can put their hearts and minds into pursuits that ease their daily troubles.
At Huck House we know the importance of a high school education and the difference a diploma can make on these young people’s lives. This is why we support community partners like City Year Columbus who work tirelessly to identify students who may need a little extra assistance and motivation to stay in school and graduate.
City Year Columbus is an education-focused nonprofit organization that partners with Columbus City Schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate through individualized academic support, near-peer mentoring and whole school engagement initiatives.
City Year works closely with the school principal and teachers to determine which students need extra help, then implements individualized, data-driven solutions for each “focus list” student while providing support to the entire school community. City Year AmeriCorps members serve all day, every day throughout the school year to ensure that students are receiving the support they need both in and out of the classroom.
HOW CITY YEAR WORKS IN SCHOOLS
- Attendance – City Year AmeriCorps members greet students every morning, lead whole school attendance initiatives and make phone calls to the guardians of absent students.
- Coursework – City Year AmeriCorps members lead individualized 1:1 academic interventions and small group tutoring sessions in math and English, provide additional support in the classroom to help teachers differentiate instruction and lead afterschool homework help and enrichment programming.
- Behavior – City Year AmeriCorps members provide 1:1 coaching and mentoring to help students grow their social-emotional skills such as self-awareness, optimistic thinking and empathy.
- Whole School Support – City Year AmeriCorps members participate in school committees, organize family engagement events, support parent-teacher conferences, complete physical service projects, help with arrival and dismissal and serve as a near-peer role model to all students.
Since 1994, City Year Columbus has deployed over 1,500 AmeriCorps members into the community, provided more than a million hours of service in Columbus, impacted over 76,000 students, and encouraged nearly 10,000 volunteers to engage in our community
This school year, City Year Columbus will be continuing our work with a new team of 62 AmeriCorps members in the following Columbus City Schools: Mifflin High School, Linden McKinley STEM Academy, South High School, Champion Middle School, Trevitt Elementary School, Livingston Elementary School, Windsor STEM Academy.
2018-2019 DATA
During the 2018-2019 school year 62 City Year Columbus AmeriCorps members served over 3,800 students in 7 Columbus City Schools and provided 11,920 hours of individualized interventions to 665 students.
Academics
322 students were enrolled in literacy tutoring, and 376 students were enrolled in math tutoring
- 6,365 – total number of hours AmeriCorps members spent tutoring students in literacy
- 56% of students met or exceeded one year of growth on the ELA NWEA MAP Assessment
- 46% of students who started the year with a D or F in ELA ended the year with a C or above
- 4,641 – total number of hours AmeriCorps members spent tutoring students in math
- 53% of students met or exceeded one year of growth on the Math NWEA MAP Assessment
- 35% of students who started the year with a D or F in math ended the year with a C or above
Social-Emotional Skills
- 240 students were enrolled in behavior coaching
- 58% of students met or exceeded one year of growth in their social-emotional skills according to the DESSA
- 716 – total number of hours AmeriCorps members spent helping students develop social-emotional skills
Whole School Support
- 3,885 students received whole school support
- 4,123 phone calls were made by City Year AmeriCorps members to the parents and guardians of absent students
- 74 school events and initiatives were hosted by City Year for students and families
- 180 students received individualized support to help improve their average daily attendance
- 86 students regularly attended City Year afterschool programming
Partnerships
- 89% of partner teachers agree or strongly agree that AmeriCorps members help improve their students’ confidence in their ability to learn
- 92% of partner teachers agree or strongly agree that AmeriCorps members help create opportunities for their students to work collaboratively
- 87% of partner teachers agree or strongly agree that AmeriCorps members provide essential academic supports that students wouldn’t otherwise receive
