Huck House Youth Award Winner Micheal Combs
Micheal is an amazing young man. Mike is being raised by his father and has had many struggles with stable housing. Mike is constantly faced with the challenges of being a young black male in the inner city. When Mike entered Walnut Ridge High School as a freshman, he was unsuccessful academically and was removed from school repeatedly for behavior incidents. Mike began to realize that too many young men around him were falling prey to their environment. He knew he needed to be the one to make a change. Fast forward to the ’16-’17 school year and Mike is a student in the construction program at the Ft. Hayes career center. He is a leader in the BE THE ONE group and is often found counseling other young men on their choices and their ripple effect.
Mike is a dedicated student at Walnut Ridge who also enjoys doing things for other people. He formed a strong bond with the Stone family at the Ronald McDonald House and led the effort to buy coats, boots and warm winter clothing for the family. Mike has tackled environmental issues and situational limits, yet he stands out as a trustworthy and dependable young man.
