The celebration of Pride began in 1970, one year following the famous Stonewall Riots that took place in Greenwich Village in New York City. NYC then hosted the first ever Pride celebration.The celebration lasted approximately a week. Celebrations ended with a march that included 150 individuals. That same year, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco joined in the Pride celebrations.Columbus Pride started in 1981 with roughly 200 people participating in the march.
Columbus Pride now includes Stonewall Pride and Community Pride events. Columbus is celebrating Pride June 9 – 16th, 2019 with a variety of activities taking place throughout the city. Cities throughout the United States and the world now celebrate Pride in a variety of ways.
At Huck House, Pride is an opportunity for us to show that we are a safe place for all. Gender identity, sexual orientation, race, economic status, etc. does not matter, one is safe and always welcome at Huck House. This year, we asked staff to identify why everyone is welcome at Huck House.
